Sol Plaatje University is a public university in Kimberley and the only university in the Northern Cape. It is named after Solomon Tshekisho Plaatje, the writer, linguist and founding general secretary of the South African Native National Congress.

The university was one of the first two established in post-apartheid South Africa. Political endorsement for a Northern Cape university came in 2012, with the inner city of Kimberley confirmed as the site of the main campus, and the institution opened in 2014 with an intake of about 124 students.

Teaching is organised across four schools: Natural and Applied Sciences; Economic and Management Sciences; Education; and Humanities.
