South African Bureau of Standards (SABS)

The South African Bureau of Standards is the national standards body. It operates under the Standards Act, 2008 (Act No. 8 of 2008), and was originally established in 1945.
It develops, promotes and maintains South African National Standards, and represents South Africa in the International Organization for Standardization and the International Electrotechnical Commission.
Alongside standards development it provides conformity assessment services: testing, certification of products and management systems, and inspection. Its certification mark is widely recognised in the South African market. Its regulatory enforcement function was separated in 2008 into the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications, leaving SABS as the standards and voluntary certification body.
