The South African National Energy Development Institute directs and conducts applied energy research and promotes energy efficiency. It was established under the National Energy Act, 2008 (Act No. 34 of 2008).
Its research and demonstration work covers energy efficiency, renewable energy, cleaner fossil fuel technologies, carbon capture and storage, smart grids, and energy data and modelling.
It hosts the national energy efficiency and demand side management programmes, runs the energy efficiency tax incentive verification under section 12L of the Income Tax Act, and maintains the South African Centre for Carbon Capture and Storage. It reports within the electricity and energy portfolio.
