The South African Nuclear Energy Corporation is the state-owned company responsible for nuclear energy research and development, operating under the Nuclear Energy Act, 1999 (Act No. 46 of 1999).

It operates the SAFARI-1 research reactor at Pelindaba, west of Pretoria, which is among the world’s largest producers of medical radioisotopes. Through its subsidiary NTP Radioisotopes it supplies molybdenum-99 and related products used in nuclear medicine internationally, and through Pelchem it produces fluorochemical products.

Its other statutory responsibilities include managing radioactive waste disposal on behalf of the state, discharging South Africa’s obligations under international nuclear non-proliferation agreements and safeguards, and decommissioning and decontaminating historic nuclear facilities. Nuclear safety is regulated independently by the National Nuclear Regulator.
