The South African Pharmacy Council regulates the pharmacy profession. It operates under the Pharmacy Act, 1974 (Act No. 53 of 1974).

It registers pharmacists, pharmacist interns, pharmacist assistants and pharmacy support personnel, and registers the pharmacies from which practice is conducted. Registration is a precondition for lawful practice and for owning or operating a pharmacy.

It accredits pharmacy education and training providers, sets good pharmacy practice standards, inspects pharmacies for compliance, and exercises disciplinary jurisdiction over registered persons. Its standards govern the storage, compounding and dispensing of medicines and the provision of pharmaceutical care to patients.
