Stellenbosch University

Stellenbosch University is a public research university in the Western Cape winelands, with a community of more than 30,000 students and about 3,000 permanent staff across five campuses. Roughly 4,000 of its students come from some 100 countries outside South Africa.

The university opened on 2 April 1918 with four faculties — Science, Education, Arts and Social Sciences, and AgriSciences — 503 students and 40 lecturers. It now has ten faculties. Eight are on the main Stellenbosch campus; Medicine and Health Sciences sits at Tygerberg alongside the academic hospital, and the Business School at Bellville Park.

Stellenbosch records the highest weighted research output per full-time academic staff member of any South African university and the second-highest number of NRF-rated scientists in the country. It holds 18 South African Research Chairs and is recognised particularly for biomedical tuberculosis research, wine biotechnology, animal sciences and mathematical biosciences.
