The University of KwaZulu-Natal is a public research university formed in 2004 through the merger of the University of Natal and the University of Durban-Westville.
It operates five campuses: Howard College, Westville, Medical School and Edgewood in and around Durban, and Pietermaritzburg. Teaching spans four colleges covering Agriculture, Engineering and Science; Health Sciences; Humanities; and Law and Management Studies.
Its Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine has a long history of training doctors from communities previously excluded from medical education, and the university has a substantial research profile in HIV and tuberculosis, hosting and partnering with major research programmes in that field.
