The University of Pretoria is a public research university in Pretoria, Gauteng, and South Africa’s largest contact institution by enrolment, with roughly 56,400 students of whom some 53,100 study on campus.
It opened in 1908 with four professors and 32 students, in a house known as Kya Rosa, when the arts and science courses of the Transvaal University College were moved from Johannesburg to Pretoria. Faculties of agriculture, theology, economics and political science, veterinary science, and music followed between 1917 and 1923. The university today spans nine faculties and a business school across seven campuses covering some 1,120 hectares.
Its research output places it among the leading academic centres on the continent.
