The University of the Western Cape is a public university in Bellville, Cape Town. It was established in 1960 under apartheid legislation as a college for people classified as Coloured, and became a fully autonomous university in 1983.
It has a distinctive history of resistance to apartheid, formally rejecting the ideology on which it was founded and opening admission to all students in the 1980s. That history remains part of its stated identity as a university committed to social justice.
It teaches across seven faculties including Arts and Humanities, Community and Health Sciences, Dentistry, Economic and Management Sciences, Education, Law, and Natural Sciences. Its research strengths include bioinformatics, biotechnology, and water and sanitation.
