The University of the Witwatersrand is a public research university in Johannesburg, generally known as Wits. It traces its origins to the South African School of Mines founded in Kimberley in 1896, which moved to Johannesburg and was granted full university status in 1922.
Teaching is organised across five faculties: Commerce, Law and Management; Engineering and the Built Environment; Health Sciences; Humanities; and Science. Its main campuses are in Braamfontein and Parktown, the latter housing the health sciences faculty alongside the major Johannesburg teaching hospitals.
The university has a strong research profile in mining and geosciences, palaeoanthropology, and health sciences. It is custodian of the Sterkfontein Caves within the Cradle of Humankind, and its origins in mining engineering remain visible in its concentration of earth science research.
