Department of Cooperative Governance (DCoG)

The Department of Cooperative Governance supports and strengthens the provincial and local spheres of government, and coordinates the cooperative government arrangements set out in Chapter 3 of the Constitution.
Its work covers municipal governance and capacity, the local government fiscal and institutional framework, municipal infrastructure funding, and support to municipalities in distress. It administers the Municipal Systems Act and the Municipal Structures Act, and runs the Community Work Programme. The National Disaster Management Centre, which coordinates the national response to disasters, sits within the department.
It shares a ministry with the Department of Traditional Affairs. The Municipal Infrastructure Support Agent, the South African Local Government Association and the Municipal Demarcation Board fall within the portfolio.
