South African Airways is the national airline, operating scheduled passenger services from its Johannesburg hub. It was founded in 1934 and operated as a state-owned company for most of its history.
The airline entered business rescue in December 2019 and ceased most operations during the COVID-19 pandemic. It emerged from business rescue in 2021 with a substantially reduced fleet and network, and resumed a limited set of regional and domestic routes.
Government agreed to sell a majority stake to the Takatso Consortium, but that transaction was terminated in 2024, leaving the airline in state ownership while its future ownership is reconsidered. Its subsidiaries include SAA Technical, Air Chefs and the SAA Cargo division. It falls within the Department of Transport portfolio.
