The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment is responsible for environmental management, conservation, and the forestry and fisheries sectors. It took its current form in 2019, when forestry and fisheries were combined with the former Department of Environmental Affairs.
Its environmental mandate covers biodiversity and conservation, environmental impact assessment and authorisations, air and water quality regulation, waste management, chemicals management, and South Africa’s climate change response and international climate commitments. Its forestry work covers state plantations and indigenous forests, and its fisheries branch manages fishing rights allocation and the sustainable use of marine living resources.
South African National Parks, the South African National Biodiversity Institute, the South African Weather Service and iSimangaliso Wetland Park Authority report to it.
