Department of Police (SAPS)
National Department · Justice and Protection Services
The Department of Police is the administrative home of the South African Police Service, established under Chapter 11 of the Constitution and the South African Police Service Act, 1995 (Act No. 68 of 1995).
Its constitutional functions are to prevent, combat and investigate crime, maintain public order, protect and secure the people of South Africa and their property, and uphold and enforce the law. It operates through provincial commissioners, police stations, and specialised units including the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation and the Public Order Policing units.
Civilian oversight is exercised separately by the Civilian Secretariat for Police Service and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, both of which report to the same Minister but function independently of the police service.
