The Department of Science, Technology and Innovation is responsible for national policy on research, development and innovation, and for the public science system that supports it.
It funds and coordinates research infrastructure and human capital development, supports technology commercialisation and innovation in industry, and represents South Africa in international science collaborations. Major national programmes include the Square Kilometre Array radio telescope, the hydrogen economy strategy, and bio-economy and space science initiatives.
The National Research Foundation, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, the Human Sciences Research Council, the South African National Space Agency, the Technology Innovation Agency and the Academy of Science of South Africa fall within its portfolio.
