The Department of Communications and Digital Technologies is responsible for policy on information and communications technology, broadcasting, postal services and the digital economy. It was formed in 2019 by merging the former Department of Telecommunications and Postal Services with the Department of Communications.
Its work covers broadband policy and rollout, spectrum policy, the migration from analogue to digital terrestrial television, digital skills and inclusion, data and cloud policy, and government’s approach to emerging technologies.
Its portfolio includes the South African Post Office, the South African Broadcasting Corporation, Sentech, the State Information Technology Agency, the .za Domain Name Authority, the Universal Service and Access Agency of South Africa, the National Electronic Media Institute of South Africa and the Film and Publication Board. ICASA regulates the sectors independently.
