The Department of Transport is responsible for transport policy, regulation and infrastructure across road, rail, civil aviation and maritime transport.
It sets national transport policy and legislation, maintains the road traffic and public transport regulatory framework, and funds public transport through grants to provinces and municipalities. Road safety, driver and vehicle licensing, and the national road network fall within its remit.
A large portfolio of entities reports to it, including the South African National Roads Agency, the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa, the Road Accident Fund, the Road Traffic Management Corporation, the Air Traffic and Navigation Services company, the South African Civil Aviation Authority and the South African Maritime Safety Authority.
