The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture is responsible for sport and recreation, arts and culture, and heritage. It was formed in 2019 by merging the former Department of Sport and Recreation with the Department of Arts and Culture.
Its work covers school and community sport, support to national federations and high-performance athletes, the promotion of the arts and the creative industries, language policy and the promotion of the official languages, and the conservation of national heritage. It funds national museums, theatres, libraries and archives.
A large portfolio of entities reports to it, including the National Arts Council, the South African Heritage Resources Agency, the National Film and Video Foundation, Boxing South Africa, the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport, the National Library of South Africa and the country’s declared cultural institutions.
